A Royal Yet Humble Queen: Homily for the Memorial of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Today, we celebrate the memorial of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Mary is our queen because she is the Mother of Jesus, the King of Kings. She is the queen of heaven and earth because of her relationship with her son, Our Lord Jesus Christ. St. Alphonsus Liguori says: “Because the virgin Mary was raised to such a lofty dignity as to be the mother of the King of kings, it is deservedly and by every right that the Church has honored her with the title of ‘Queen.” Mary’s queenship shows us that being united to Jesus gives us royal citizenship, participation in a heavenly court. You and I are adopted sons and daughters of a King and of a Queen Mother. We have a King and Queen whose greatness does not distance them from us. They are closer, more loving, and more intimately attentive to us than anyone else. And although our King and Queen are so holy and so noble, they are also still so humble. Jesus Christ is the King of the Universe who came to serve, not to be served. The Blessed Virgin Mary is the Queen Mother of God and also the handmaid of the Lord. May her example of humility teach us to counteract our temptations to pride and hypocrisy. Just like our King and our Queen, may we remain humble before both God and man.

O Mary, our Queen, humble of heart, make our hearts like unto thine.
