Jesus tells us today the parable of the dragnet. A dragnet is a very large net that brings in all kinds of different fish and debris from a lake. Fishermen cast this net over a very large area of a lake and then pull it in to the shore. After they draw in the catch, they sort out what is good and what is bad.
The message for us is that you and I, as disciples of Jesus Christ, are called to share the message of the Kingdom of God not with only the few people whom we believe to be good enough, but rather with everyone we encounter. Just like those fishermen with a large dragnet, we must try to draw everyone into the Church by sharing God’s message and God’s love with all people. It is not our job to determine who is bad and who is good, who is worthy of hearing God’s message and who is not worthy. At the end of our lives, God will sort out the good from the bad.
Today we should examine our consciences. Do I judge the people around me at Mass? Do I believe that some people belong in the church, and some do not? Do I welcome anyone and everyone to come and hear the word of God? Do I share the joy and love of my faith with everyone I encounter, or only with those whom I judge to be worthy? Let us repent of the ways we have judged others and have excluded them from the community of the Church. Let us ask the Lord to give us His heart and His desire to bring in many fish into His kingdom.
